Yes, we ate the WHOLE Pizza!!!
Whenever I visit my home in San Francisco, I go directly from the airport to one of my neighborhood food craving destinations. One of the many things I love about San Francisco is the ability to get from here to there in fifteen minutes or less. It is not uncommon to hit four different social events, including cocktails with friends, dinners, store openings, and fundraisers in one night. Being the Food Fashionista, I made one stop before satisfying my hunger and that was to satisfy my other hunger for pretty things and pick up my new python Manolos. Next stop was my favorite little treasure, Little Star Pizza.
I grew up a fan of Zachary's deep dish pizza in the East Bay. Although I would happily take my San Francisco amigos on food field trips to Berkeley and Oakland to visit Zachary's Pizza, I was super ecstatic when Little Star (no relation to Zacharys) opened up in San Francisco. It was the first time I had deep dish in California as good as Zachary's and I was ecstatic.
With two locations in San Francisco, Little Star Pizza offers both deep dish and thin crust specialty pizzas along with a few appetizers and a couple of desserts. An appetizer favorite includes the unconventionally served Garlic Bread which arrives with a bulb of roasted garlic with warm sourdough bread served with a blend of butter and extra virgin olive oil. My friend Kimber loves the Garlic Bread so much that she literally commands that we order two for the table, one for her, one for the rest of us. LOL
Little Star's Mixed Salad
Little Star's Mixed Salad is also a great pre-course to the main course Pizza. The Mixed Salad is a airy tossed mixture of greens, gorgonzola, cherry tomatoes, red onions, red bell peppers and toasted walnuts with a homemade vinaigrette dressing. It is light and refreshing option to share with the table.
I definitely suggest ordering one of the Deep Dish Specialty Pizzas at Little Star. What makes the deep dish pizzas at Little Star so absolutely food craving worthy is the delectable buttery cornmeal crust which acts as the perfect frame for all the mouth watering ingredients. One of my faves is the signature Little Star which is a spinach blended with ricotta and feta, mushrooms, onion and garlic. The first bite is always as good as the last and in my mind I am always thinking....It's so nice to be in San Francisco...Why doesn't L.A. have a Little Star in sight? It definitely would do well with the L.A. hipster crowd and the price points... can't be beat. Our total without alcohol came out to approximately $16 each.
In addition to the tables, Little Star has a bar where you can order food and grab a glass of wine, a pear soda, or a champagne cocktail. This place gets packed and they only take reservations at their Mission District location, so go hungry, expect a wait, but don't fret. Know that you can order a drink or two at the bar, play some favorite tunes in their well edited jukebox, and look forward to sinking your teeth in to some mighty fine deep dish pizza.
Oh and my suggestion is think big and go for the large pizza. If you can't finish it all, you will have some fantastic leftovers and a fabulous lunch to dream about for the coming day.
